The “Unbasic” collages are loosely and sometimes directly based on Bauhaus designs, including imagery from Johannes Itten's highly influential "Basic Course" in design and form at Bauhaus, which was created immediately following the devastation of WWI. Itten wrote about the need to teach visual basics in the context of his students' "low morale" after the war. Constructed from 2D color design paper and from the unwanted photographs discarded by students in art school, the artist teaches herself 2D design through the students “failures” and the appropriated designs of one of the most revered 20th century art movements and pedagogical institutions. In the context of contemporary US wars, "clean design" and the seductions of "visual simplicity" are reconsidered as closely connected to conflict, chaos and destruction. |
